Fund 17 met “Khulu” Kevin Buckner while doing community surveying in the 7th ward as he was selling his homemade jams on Bayou Road. Fund 17 fellow, Ruth, began working with Khulu in February 2015 to track expenses and sales, conduct price-setting research, and strategize branding. By May 2015, Khulu had completed a business plan, obtained his LLC, organized an accounting system, created an online store and more. Khulu is Fund 17’s first endorsed borrower on Kiva. His $1,200 loan allowed him to purchase new equipment, supplies and insurance necessary to sell at new markets.
